Huichol Indian Sacred Art Nerika , yarn painting

The Huichol Indians are a culture steeped in artistic expression. From the very clothes they wear to the offerings they leave at sacred places of power, there life is like a canvas onto which they paint their visions and dreams. The tribe is famous for its beautiful embroidery and weaving, as well as intricate beadwork, including jewelry and detailed sculptures. The one of a kind "Yarn Paintings" have become well know throughout the world. These paintings are made by pressing strands of colored yarn into beeswax, which has been flattened onto a piece of wood. All of the designs found in the art are said to be representations of the divine. It is an unspoken law in the Huichol tradition, that before one can begin to make any piece of art, they must have either a dream or a vision of the designs they plan to use. It is because of this that the people continually pray for good dreams, in order to receive inspiration for their artistic endeavors.

Much of the Huichol art requires patience unknown to the modern world. For instance the large beaded figures, such as the deer, jaguars and eagles, are made one bead at a time. Making the art is much like a meditative practice, involving a great deal of focus and concentration.

Today, much of the outside world has gained a significant appreciation for the Huichol art. In stores and markets throughout Mexico as well as in many other countries, one can find gorgeously embroidered and woven bags, beaded jewelry and Yarn Paintings all made by this ancient nation of artisans.

                                                Huichol Shamanism

Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and moreover, a way of life. Huichol shamanism honors all of creation, especially the spirit of nature- the power of the animals, the winged ones, the minerals, and plants. This shamanic tradition involves healing and empowerment through personal transformation and direct experience as well as the healing of our families, communities and our environment. By following the shaman's path, we can truly learn to inhabit the earth and our being with gentleness and respect.

The Huichol say we are created from the elements of the natural world- fire, air, water and earth. Because of this, each of us is a miniature universe, a mirror of both the natural and the spiritual worlds. All the knowledge and secrets of these two worlds are inside of us and everything is perfectly arranged. Shamanism teaches us to tap into that arrangement, to understand and to live in harmony with the natural and spiritual worlds.

Ceremony, sacred dance, vision quest, and pilgrimages to places of power in nature are all essential aspects of shamanism. Through these techniques, the shamanic circle embraces us unifying our lives with strength, healing and love.

Yaqui History

In the Sonora desert of northwestern Mexico are the Bacatete Mountains from wish descends the Rio Yaqui, a large river that carries an abundance of water from the highlands through deep mountains gorges down onto the desert plain towards the sea coast destined for the Gulf of California.

The Yaqui are an indigenous people who are linguistically and culturally related to the Hopi, Huichol, Tarahumara, Mayo and Nahuatl tribes. From the earliest times, the Yaqui concentrated themselves along the lower river banks. The people lived in small, dome shaped houses covered with cane and palm mats. They channeled the water into the fields in which they grew corn, squash, beans and amaranth for food the Surem, the Yaqui ancestors. The Surem were a small, dwarf-like people who were very strong and wise. Their profound understanding of nature gave them insight into not only the past but also the future. They foresaw on the horizon of time de devastating cultural changes that were about to occur and prepared a way of life . the elder Surem transformed themselves into clouds , the winds, and some went to live in the seas and the mountains. The younger Surem allowed themselves to stay in present time and became the beginning of the Yaqui  bloodlines
